Willie Mullins’ exceptional performance at Aintree last week has reignited his attempt to win a second consecutive British National Hunt Trainers’ Championship and he is targeting Ayr on Saturday. They host the Scottish Grand National and Mullins has no fewer than 11 preliminary entries. Liam Bramall thinks a 12/1 shot could be the winner and also likes the chances of one at 25/1. High Class Hero (12/1, bet365) has always shaped like a a proper stayer and would be very interesting if lining up here. This son of Sulamani won an Irish point over three miles before switching hands for £90,000 and it didn’t take him long to get off the mark under rules.
Scoring easily over 2m4f on his first bumper start, he was then quickly sent over hurdles, where he progressed nicely. Four consecutive hurdles wins was followed by a disappointing effort in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham but he bounced back well to finish second narrowly at Punchestown.
We haven’t seen the best of him over fences yet and perhaps a marathon trip can bring that out. There should be loads of room to manoeuvre with his current mark and he sticks out as Mullins’ most likely chance of a winner here.
Loughglynn (25/1, bet365) was a Grade 2 winner over hurdles, scoring at Limerick over 2m7f, and you would imagine staying trips will be his cup of tea over fences. Things haven’t quite gone to plan for him this season and he remains a maiden in this sphere. It seems likely though that the best is yet to come and he could be worth giving a chance at a decent price.
