The biggest singular Flat racing day of the season is upon us! Oh yes, Ascot Champions Day is here! Adrian Wall has selected three horses at huge prices who might be worthy of an each-way tickle on the day! Best of luck if you have a bet and remember to always bet responsibly.
Spy Chief (66/1) has probably been stretched by the 7f on his last two starts but he cut out most of the running when beaten only a couple of lengths in the July Stakes at Newmarket in July and William Buick is aboard again here. It can pay to be on the front end at this meeting and perhaps he can outrun his odds as he was also a clear runner-up here in the Jersey Stakes at the Royal meeting in June.
Four of the last five winners of the Champion Stakes went off at odds of between 9/1 and 40/1, and perhaps the progressive Almeric (25/1) is being underestimated here. Andrew Balding’s three-year-old has won his last three outings, and impressed in Listed grade at Ayr when last seen finishing off like a train after a slow start. We might not have seen the very best of his yet and Oisin Murphy is aboard. He could hit the frame.
Godwinson (40/1) looks a crazy price for the Balmoral. He was sent off the 3/1 favourite for the Irish Cambridgeshire when last seen, a race that had a strong pace bias on the day and he couldn’t get involved, but a strong pace here will suit. He blasted home to win the Lincoln earlier in the season and nothing will be finishing better.
