What a punt! Monster gamble unfolds as Down Royal runner back from 100/1 into 6/1

4.55 Down Royal

Matthew Smith pulled off a big gamble at Dundalk the other night when Sarmiento Power was backed from big prices all the way into 4/1 and duly went on to win in good style. Well, this is Smith’s first runner since then and I’ll Be Handy has been backed from a staggering 100/1 all the way into 6/1 for the 1m3f handicap today, and will be ridden by the very experienced pilot Seamie Heffernan.

This 3yo has shown very little on the racetrack to date but is now being punted off the boards after a little break, and interestingly will sport blinkers for the first time on this occasion. On top of this, his mark has plummeted from a starting out handicap rating of 79, all the way down to his current rating of 52, in quite a short space of time. Could this have been the day that connections were planning? It certainly does seem that way anyway.

To move a horse that much in the market, it would take a fair amount of money, so let’s see how this massive gamble unfolds today.
