Wednesday’s best backed horse is smashed in from 20/1 to just 5/2 at Sedgefield

There are never any guarantees in this game but keeping a close eye on the betting can give you a good idea about the level of confidence behind a horse. There’s a runner in the first race at Sedgefield on Wednesday who was priced up at 20/1 by one bookmaker and that could prove to be a mistake.

Sustained market support since has seen the horse in question’s price capitulate and he’s now 5/2 and vying for favouritism. This could be a situation to watch so we’ve taken a good look at his chances below. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

2.40 Sedgefield

Fine Point (5/2, bet365) hasn’t been seen since July and wasn’t in the best of form before his break. The son of Awtaad was well beaten at Worcester and Uttoxeter in his last two but the handicapper has responded accordingly. He’s now back down to a mark of 94, which he won off at Kempton a year ago.

Clearly a return to that sort of form would give him every chance but he does have to defy a 250-day absence and will need to be fully fit for his return. Captain Cool has been consistent of late and the Jennie Candlish-trained six-year-old looks like the main danger on this occasion.

Trainer Adam Nicol has been in good form of late and is operating at a healthy strike-rate of of 33 per cent, with five winners from 15 runners in the last fortnight. That certainly bodes well and it will be interesting to see if this strong market confidence is well placed.
