The Betfair Chase takes place at Haydock on Saturday and it won’t be blessed with an abundance of runners. There will be a maximum of five runners for the big Grade 1. Defending champion A Plus Tard is unlikely to be tested and he should keep the crown. This means the win only betting market isn’t going to be very lively and each way betting is out of the window. In order to make this an interesting betting heat, some outside of the box thinking is required. Liam Bramall has picked out an interesting 14-1 shot to complete the forecast. Henry de Bromhead’s star chaser is likely to win this race for the second year in a row. A Plus Tard made a mockery of the field, beating the very useful Royal Pagaille by 22 lengths. His performance in the Gold Cup in March was freakish and unlike anything we’ve seen for a long time from a stayer. Barring accident, there’s no way he doesn’t win this race.
At time of writing, Joe Tizzard’s charge is available at a whopping 14-1. Underestimate this horse at your peril because he should be second favourite for this race. There’s plenty more to come from him over staying trips and he ran a cracker on seasonal debut at Wetherby. That run behind Bravemansgame could be looking pretty strong at Christmas and he’ll strip fitter here.
Eldorado Allen comfortably dispatched Clan Des Obeaux in Newbury’s Denman Chase back in February. As that was his first attempt at a staying trip, it was full of promise and opened many doors. I’d take his run behind Allaho in the Ryanair over Protektorat’s third against A Plus Tard in the Gold Cup any day and I fully expect him to run a huge race.
