Trainer stat: why you should follow Donald McCain’s two runners at Perth

Trainer Donald McCain is very select when it comes to choosing which horses he will send all the way up to Perth Racecourse from his base in Cheshire, but he has an incredible return with the horses he does send to the Scottish track. In the last five seasons he has amassed a 33 per cent strike-rate which means one in every three horses he sends there wins.

McCain sends two horses on the 10-hour plus round trip on Sunday so let’s take a look at the runners below. You can find all of Sunday’s free horse racing tips on the website.

2.45 Perth

Malpas will take his chance in the 2m handicap chase and if he can reproduce his effort when winning comfortably at Bangor on his penultimate start in May, he could take a lot of beating. He was below par at Uttoxeter last time but had excuses on the day as he simply doesn’t stay 2m4f, never mind that sort of trip in testing conditions. This will be his first run at Perth so he has to prove his effectiveness on the track, but he’s still fairly treated and with just six rivals in his way, he might be a bit of value in the betting to take them down.

4.45 Perth

VE Day runs in the closing 2m handicap hurdle for conditional jockeys and he is likely to open a big price as he hasn’t shown a lot in recent starts. His sole victory came in a four-runner contest at Musselburgh last year and he has struggled in the main since, but he ran well for a long way at Uttoxeter last time and continues to tumble down the weights.
