‘Heavy ground could be the making of him’ – three mud-lovers to follow at Navan

It’s a competitive day of racing on Monday, with meetings across Britain and Ireland. We’ll have horse racing tips on the website, including a NAP of the Day. Navan is a notoriously tough venue to get home in when the ground is heavy. You need a horse proven in the conditions to be successful and we’ve found three horses who fit that profile on Monday. The details can be found below.

2.18 Navan

Exceeding has a very unappealing strike-rate of just 1-27 in his career but perhaps heavy ground could be the making of him as on his first try on heavy last time, he was a very good second of 15 on his Naas return last week. If the bounce factor doesn’t apply to him here, he should take the world of beating for the Slatterys who are in fine nick at the moment. Andy Slattery will take the ride but he will have a 6lb hike to overcome if he is to win.

3.18 Navan

Dawn Rising has a very solid record on heavy going and he is a very classy type at his best, winning a Curragh Group 3 in 2024 and ended last season in good form when runner-up in the 2m4f Cesarewitch at Newmarket in October. He has to defy a 5lb hike to win this on his return but he could have too much class for them all the same.

3.48 Navan

Kool One is a dual-purpose performer who was last seen finishing midfield in a competitive handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse in November but he is a course and distance winner who relishes the mud and ran a good race from his current mark at Gowran in October.
