‘This trip is the key’ – Champions Day ante-post tips including a 16/1 shot

The Flat season is set to wind down after Saturday’s Champions Day at Ascot and there are four Group 1 races on the card. We’ve had a good look at the entries and picked out four ante-post selections to follow. These include a 16/1 shot in the Champions Sprint Stakes that is much better than his latest effort suggests. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

British Champions Sprint Stakes

Elite Status (16/1, bet365) looked like a progressive young sprinter up until his disappointing effort in the Sprint Cup at Haydock. Karl Burke’s colt has already won twice on soft ground so conditions are unlikely to cause an issue. He’s definitely better than his latest effort suggests and this is a good opportunity to prove it.

British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes

Content (10/1, William Hill) wasn’t suited by the drop back in trip when bitterly disappointing in the Prix de l’Opera. This 1m4f trip is the key to her and we should see the same filly that won the Yorkshire Oaks this summer. The turnaround from Longchamp is pretty short but if anyone can get her there in top shape it’s Aidan O’Brien.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Diego Velazquez (14/1, bet365) took a while to get going this season but his last two efforts have been much more like it. His comfortable success in Group 2 company last time out suggests he’s ready to return to this level and he hasn’t had the toughest of campaigns.

Champion Stakes

Economics (5/4, Paddy Power) has been saved for this race and he made an impressive return to action in the Irish equivalent last month. William Haggas’ colt is entitled to improve for the run and his price is unlikely to drift between now and Saturday. For anyone that likes a short one, this is the horse to side with.
