The Galway Festival continues on Wednesday and the highlight on Day 3 is the Galway Plate, one of the races of the week. It’s both valuable and prestigious in equal measure, which makes it a race everyone wants to win. We’ve had a detailed look at the 2025 renewal and we’ve also selected a couple of free tips, including a 25/1 outsider. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
It’s unlikely that any of the 22 runners will progress into graded horses in the future so we have ourselves a good old fashioned handicap.
Joseph O’Brien’s Nurburgring heads the market and he will be seeking to complete a unique double, after winning the Galway Hurdle last year. Technically he still needs to prove his stamina but after finishing second by a neck over 2m4f at Royal Ascot, it shouldn’t be an issue.
Interestingly, Harry Cobden heads over to ride Cheltenham Festival winner Jazzy Matty. He’s adaptable with regards to trip and is worth keeping an eye on. Gavin Cromwell runs Thecompanysergeant, who is another major player on the evidence of his second to Jagwar at the Cheltenham Festival.
Gordon Elliott has thrown the kitchen sink at the race and seven of his eight potential runners are guaranteed to line up. You can never rule out Willie Mullins but the market suggest his most likely winner is 16/1 shot Olympic Man, with Paul Townend riding Adamantly chosen.
Down Memory Lane (6/1, bet365) was a fairly useful novice chaser last term but fell short of the top level. Perhaps handicaps can bring out the best in him and this trip could be key. Gordon Elliott’s gelding was an impressive winner of an Irish point over three miles so the extended 2m6f here should suit.
Western Fold (25/1, bet365) remains fairly lightly raced over fences and is progressing well recently. The son of Westerner won a Tipperary beginners chase in good style back in May and followed up with a comfortable success in the Mayo National. Life will be harder off a 10lb higher mark now but further improvement seems likely.
