The latest entry stage for the Grand National at Aintree in April has left us with 85 horses. Only 31 of the remaining entries are trained in Britain which suggests it’ll be another Irish dominated field. Liam Bramall is backing one of the home team to bring home the prize. That prize is a substantial one as the total pool is a massive £1,000,000. Available at 50-1, the horse in question has plenty of class. Sam Brown (66-1, William Hill) is still lightly raced for an 11-year-old, with just 11 starts over fences. Obviously a smart animal, he defied a 750-day absence to score on chase debut at Lingfield in January 2020. He then followed that up with a 15-length win in a Grade 2 novice chase at Haydock.
Anthony Honeyball’s gelding showed an abundance of stamina when just getting touched off by Royale Pagaille in last year’s Peter Marsh Chase over an extended 3m1f at Haydock. In one of the most dominant displays in a major handicap that I’ve seen in a while, he romped home at Aintree over 3m1f last spring. Dispatching a competitive field such as that by 15 lengths is no mean feat.
His best effort so far this season came in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby where he was just four lengths behind the King George winner, whilst conceding a pound. A lot of his best form is on soft ground but that was his finest effort to date and the going was good to soft.
As long as there’s some soft in the description come April, I have no doubt that he can run a huge race. This price isn’t an accurate reflection of his chance and it does him a disservice.
