The top-class racing comes thick and fast at this time of year and there’s action from Cheltenham to look forward to this weekend. Saturday’s main event is the £125,000 December Gold Cup and there are currently 12 entries at this stage. It should be thoroughly competitive and as such, we’ve selected an outsider at a massive price who could outrun his substantial odds. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Glengouly (25/1, Betfred) is the outsider of the field here but there have been signs of a return to form in his last couple of starts. Finishing fourth under Harry Cobden that day, he was inconvenienced by a slight mistake at final fence.
He has fallen a long way down the handicapper to 121 and this is a very tempting mark. The son of Coastal Path used to be trained by Willie Mullins and even ran in the Grand National for previous connections. There’s lots of evidence to suggest he’s capable of running a big race here.
His best effort over fences came in the Thyestes Chase back in January 2024 and he ran a cracker to finish second behind Ain’t That A Shame, off a mark of 141. Faye Bramley’s gelding has only won once over fences and that success came over 2m2f at Thurles back in December 2022.
Those improved recent performances could give him some confidence and now is a good time to go back up in trip. It’s also noted that he could be running from out of the handicap but Faye Bramley has done well with ex-Mullins inmate Paggane and could revive Glengouly’s career.
