Eoin McCarthy caused quite a stir at the Listowel Harvest Festival, as he came away with six winners and was the meeting’s top trainer. It appears that he’s a shrewd target trainer and he’s set to send five runners to Clonmel on Thursday. Two of those will be ridden by Darragh O’Keeffe, who leads the championship, and this duo could spell trouble. Here we assess their chances of landing a winner or two. Elusive Ogie won a maiden hurdle at Limerick in May and O’Keeffe was also on board that day. Keeping on well up the run-in, he went on to score by two-lengths. The form has received a couple of boosts too, as the third and fourth have both won since.
This son of Elusive Pimpernel ran a cracker to finish third in a Listed handicap at Listowel last time out and that form gives him every chance. It’s unlikely that he’ll bump into that level of opposition here and with that in mind, it’ll be disappointing if he doesn’t go close.
Ollie La Ba Ba returned to winning ways with a game success over 2m2f at Listowel last month and he needed every yard of it. The return to a longer trip could suit on that evidence and you wouldn’t want to rule out a follow up success.
It’s noted that the handicapper has responded with a 5lb rise, which doesn’t look massively generous, but he’s entitled to run another big race. McCarthy has one winner from four runners in the last fortnight and he may well add to that tally.
