The weather is creating havoc for the scheduled National Hunt meetings in Britain so this is a good time to take an early look at the action over Christmas. There’s some excellent racing on both sides of the Irish Sea and you won’t want to miss it.
We’ve picked out four lesser known or overlooked horses who could be worth keeping an eye on over the Christmas period. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
This horse hails from the Eddie & Patrick Harty yard and has made an excellent start to his career over fences, winning a beginners chase at Naas in good style last month. The form of that race is working out really well and if he had a big name trainer, would almost definitely be shorter in the market for the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown on Boxing Day.
Venetia Williams doesn’t get the respect she deserves as a trainer and she’s doing a magnificent job with Djelo. He was a good horse last season, winning the Peterborough Chase and the Denman Chase, but appears to have reached a new level this season. There’s more to come from him so don’t rule out a big run in the King George.
Irish point winner Mister Pessimistic won a Listowel bumper on his rules debut and the runner-up has boosted the form by winning a Listed contest at Cheltenham. He beat a subsequent winner in a Cork maiden hurdle after that and deserves a shot at Grade 1 level.
The ground at Chepstow is often very testing at this time of year and low weights can be a big advantage. Livin On Luco would be sneaking in near the bottom of the weights in the Welsh Grand National and is proven on testing ground. Victorious over a marathon trip at Fontwell when last seen, he can outrun his substantial odds.
