There’s plenty of Irish runners over in Britain on Saturday! Let’s take a look at their chances below.
Anthony McCann’s Whimsy has an each-way chance in the 2m Listed Mares’ Hurdle at Newbury. She is consistent and was beaten only around 4l when in a Grade 3 at Navan 12 days ago.
Solly Atwell represents Cian Collins in this 2m6f handicap chase. Down at the foot of the weights, he won at Galway in September before impressively backing it up at Downpatrick 11 days later. The BHA handicapper took no chances when sixth at Cheltenham last time and he could struggle here again.
Arguably the best Irish chance of the day, Tony Martin’s Zanndabad can win the 2m6f novices’ hurdle. Useful on the Flat, he bolted up in a handicap hurdle at Sedgefield in October and should win this.
The Watsons send over Broomfield Present in the gruelling 3m6f handicap chase. The 9yo ran one of his better races when going close at Ayr over 3m on latest and looks like a proper stayer.
Torquay Road is another Collins runner in the 2m5f handicap hurdle. He’s another who went to Cheltenham off the back of two wins in a row but he struggled off his British mark too. He still can’t be discounted.
Willie Mullins’ hopes of landing the Fighting Fifth rests on Anzadam’s shoulders. The unbeaten gelding won a pair of Grade 3s at Fairyhouse and Naas last winter and they waste no time in sending him right to the top table.
Tony Martin also runs Hamsiyann in the 2m4f handicap hurdle. He won a 2m5f Cheltenham handicap on his return last season, but has struggled since. It would be folly to dismiss him given his yard.
Ten Irish runners in the Coral Gold Cup! The pick of them could be Gorgeous Tom, which is Darragh O’Keefe’s sole ride of the day. Blizzard Of Oz and Three Card Brag enter the equation too with live chances. Watch the market!
Away from the main action, John O’Donoghue runs Joy Pain And Sky in the closing junior bumper at Doncaster. The daughter of Highland Reel is a half-sister to four winners and her dam won over 1m4f. The market will reveal expectations.
Anthony McCann’s Luminous Light runs in the 2m handicap chase. He impressed when landing a novice at Punchestown 16 days ago and is a live each-way contender here.
