The Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday is one of the highlights of the season and it’s in danger of seriously cutting up. There are only six entries at this stage and there are major doubts surrounding the participation of two of the potential runners.
With this in mind, Liam Bramall has selected one of the lesser-fancied candidates who could benefit massively. The horse in question hails from a yard that is absolutely flying at the moment. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Royale Pagaille is a really likeable horse that deserves his day in the sun. He ran a cracker to finish second in last season’s King George as the flat three-mile trip would have been sharp enough for him, at an easy track like Kempton. Connections will be hoping the ground stays as heavy as possible because this horse absolutely loves the mud.
The Venetia Williams yard has been in cracking form in the last couple of weeks, with a strike-rate in the 40 per cent range. This is certainly a good time to catch him and this will be his best chance to win a Grade 1. Shishkin is almost certainly not going to run and Bravemansgame’s participation hinges on the ground. Protektorat could be the only Grade 1 horse in the field and you should never be afraid of just one horse.
This horse has an excellent record here at Haydock and has won the competitive Peter Marsh Chase twice, off marks of 156 and a whopping 163. The latter of those wins is probably one of the best pieces of form on offer and he’s well worth considering here.
