The top quality racing continues throughout the summer months and Ascot is next on the agenda. We have the Group 1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes to look forward to on Saturday. French raider Calandagan heads the ante-post market at the moment but Liam Bramall thinks the market has got this one wrong again. There’s another horse that beat him last time out and is well set to confirm the form. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Jan Brueghel is available at odds of 5/2, as opposed to Calandagan’s 2/1, and it’s hard to understand the price difference. Aidan O’Brien’s four-year-old remains relatively lightly raced and he produced a career best performance to win the Coronation Cup at Epsom.
He managed to outbattle Calandagan and come out on top by half-a-length. Some said that the French raider didn’t want to go past him but it appears that he was just beaten by the better horse.
This son of Galileo tends to only do as much as he needs to, so the narrow margins of his successes don’t accurately reflect his ability. Don’t be fooled, this is a proper horse and his St Leger success proves he stays well and clearly he also has the turn of foot required to win top races over 1m4f.
It won’t be long before Jan Brueghel establishes himself as a bona fide Group 1 performer over this trip and victory here would surely do that. There are few trainers around that can get horses to improve through the season like Aidan O’Brien can and there could be more to come.
