The King George has fallen apart so this 11/1 shot could be the answer

British National Hunt racing’s Christmas showpiece the King George VI Chase promised to be a race for the ages at one point but unless we get some late entries, it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case. The race appears to have fallen apart somewhat and that provides opportunities. Liam Bramall has picked out an ante-post selection at 11/1 shot that could be the answer to this puzzle. L’Homme Presse (11/1, William Hill) remains lightly raced and a rating of 167 puts him bang in the mix here. Running well for a long way in the Gold Cup, it seems pretty obvious that he didn’t stay and this test will be more suitable.

Venetia Williams has been in fine form for a sustained period and big Saturday winners have been her speciality recently. If she continues her form into the festive period, there’s every chance he can at least make the frame here.

Grey Dawning has the most scope for improvement and is the rightful favourite with that in mind. Inconsistent French raider Il Est Francais looked special when winning the Kauto Star and would be dangerous if turning up in similar form. Corbetts Cross, Banbridge and Envoi Allen are all easily opposable and this selection is next in the market.

He has certainly blotted his copybook fewer times than many and was running a huge race in the 2022 renewal before unseating at the last. Redemption is on offer here, as is another big winner for the Venetia Williams & Charlie Deutsch partnership.
