The Five leading contenders and an outsider to follow in the Qipco 1000 Guineas

Billesdon Brook wins the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket

There was plenty of drama in Saturday’s 2000 Guineas as previously unbeaten superstar juvenile City Of Troy bombed out at very skinny odds. It’s the fillies’ turn at Newmarket on Sunday and the Qipco 1000 Guineas takes place at 3.40. We’ve assessed the chances of the five leading contenders and selected an outsider that is capable of outrunning her huge odds. Contenders

5. Fallen Angel

Karl Burke’s filly was an excellent juvenile and is the best horse on ratings. She’s our tip for the race and the favourite looks hard to oppose. Winner of the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last season, this very talented horse could have a big year ahead of her.

2. Dance Sequence

Charlie Appleby’s three-year-old still looked a little on the green side when beaten in the Nell Gwyn here last month and should improve for the run. Her trainer will be looking to complete the Guineas double, having won the colt’s equivalent on Saturday.

3. Ramatuelle

This French raider had some cracking form over 6f as a juvenile last term and won the Prix Robert Papin by four lengths. There are no guarantees that she’ll get a mile on that evidence but her pedigree suggests it’s certainly a possibility.

12. See The Fire

Andrew Balding’s filly placed twice in Group company last year but those pieces of form suggest she has a bit to find with Ylang Ylang and Darnation. It’s obviously not out of the question that she can win here but others appeal more.

16. Ylang Ylang

City Of Troy’s run in the 2000 Guineas makes her hard to back here and it really hasn’t been the best of seasons for Ballydoyle thus far. On the plus side, she won the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile over course and distance when last seen and clearly possesses plenty of ability.

Outsider to follow

Darnation showed us plenty as a juvenile last season and she was a good winner of the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster. She’s perhaps been overshadowed by her stablemate but Karl Burke’s second string runner is a nice filly in her own right.
