There’s no shortage of Irish raiders in Britain this weekend but two gambling yards head to Windsor on Sunday and the bookies will run for cover if the money starts to pile in for their runners. Tony Martin has one runner and Charles Byrnes has two so a market check is certainly advised.
Tony Martin runs Zanndabad in the 2m4f handicap hurdle and Daniel King has made the journey across to take the ride, his sole mount of the day. A four-time winner on the Flat when trained in France, the six-year-old hasn’t won over hurdles yet but he has finished runner-up in his last three starts in competitive contests. He bumped into a good horse at Newcastle when last seen but could be lurking off a nice mark back in a handicap here. The market will be revealing and Martin landed a bit of a gamble at Dundalk on Friday evening.
The bookies are taking no chances with the Charles Byrnes-trained From The Ashes in the 3m5f handicap chase. At around the 8/1 mark, he does look very short taking all of his form into account combined with an inflated British mark, but the step up to an extreme trip for the first time could bring about major improvement. Pulled up in a Punchestown handicap chase when last seen, encouragement can be taken from the fact he came close to landing a big gamble over hurdles at Leopardstown last March. He has plenty to prove but as with the majority of Byrnes runners, the market will tell the story with regard to his chances.
