It’s not too often that some of the most exciting horses are seen throughout the winter months on the all-weather but it’s always noteworthy when they are. Last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech only made his debut in the January before and Charlie Appleby is attempting to repeat the trick in 2025.
He runs a very exciting prospect in Kempton‘s feature race on Wednesday and the horse in question is as big as 20/1 for Guineas in May. Here we take a detailed look at him and the 20/1 won’t last if he wins well. Check out our free tips page for daily content and our ante-post Cheltenham tips are available now!
Opera Ballo could hardly have been more impressive when winning on debut over course and distance last month. The strapping son of Ghaiyyath pulled well clear of the field to score by eight-and-a-half lengths under Billy Loughnane.
Trainer Charlie Appleby had won that very maiden in each of the last five years before that, including with Notable Speech in 2024. It has to be said that Opera Ballo was considerably more impressive on debut and his Classic-winning stablemate also won this race last year.
The betting for the 2025 2000 Guineas is a lot more open than in most years and the Aidan O’Brien-trained The Lion In Winter heads the market at 6/1. Stablemate and award-winning juvenile Shadow Of Light is next in the market and it would be interesting to see who William Buick would side with.
Obviously we’ll learn more about Opera Ballo’s chances here but the early signs suggest he could be an exceptional horse. Buick is set to take the ride here and the €600,000 purchase will be putting his Classic credentials to the test.
