Glorious Goodwood is just around the corner and the South Downs’ summer highlight provides lots of Group 1 action. One of the main events over the course of the festival is the Nassau Stakes, a Group 1 for fillies and mares aged three and above. Three-year-olds have an excellent recent record and that could be set to continue. Liam Bramall fancies one horse in particular and the filly in question is going to be very hard to beat. Whirl is arguably the best middle-distance three-year-old filly in the division, despite defeat at the hands of stablemate Minnie Hauk in the Oaks. Moore was on board her conqueror that day and team riding instructions were definitely employed.
The daughter of Wootton Bassett set the race up perfectly for her stablemate but such is her talent and tenacity, she scrapped all the way to the line and never gave up. Aidan O’Brien’s filly was a very impressive winner of the Musidora at York before that, her first attempt over an extended 1m2f.
She earned a well deserved first Group 1 success in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh when last seen. The very smart older filly Kalpana followed her closely throughout but Whirl managed to hold her off and pull away again before the line.
This task could potentially be her toughest to date but she possesses all the attributes required to come out on top and there’s no way O’Brien’s three-year-old will go down without a fight. Ryan Moore will be on board and further Group 1 glory is anticipated.
