Finding winners is never any easy thing to do, especially in handicaps, and it’s often wise to side with unexposed sorts who have a secret or two from the handicapper. With this in mind, we’ve picked out four horses making their handicap debuts on Monday that could be worth a watch. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Sofia the First is progressing nicely and followed up her third at Salisbury by getting off the mark in a Lingfield maiden next time. This filly is improving with every run and her profile suggests there should be more to come upon switching to handicaps. An opening mark of 72 looks very fair and she can follow up here.
Retracement was an easy winner of a course and distance maiden back in July and that should stand the son of Australia in good stead. He was a little disappointing under a penalty at Goodwood last time but the return to a mile should suit and William Haggas has a 60 per cent strike-rate at the track this year.
Liberatus has only had two starts to date and he improved significantly on his debut effort to get off the mark at Hamilton when last seen. It’s notable that Oisin Murphy has been booked to take the ride and connections will surely be delighted with an opening mark of 69.
Altmore is another handicap debutant from the William Haggas yard and he just about squeezes into this 0-75. Not beaten far when fourth on debut, he was a narrow winner of a Chepstow maiden next time and there could be any amount of improvement to come here.
