Galway‘s three-day October meeting comes to a conclusion with an eight-race Flat card on Monday and it’s going to be hard work. The ground is officially heavy and that’s likely to suit some horses better than others. With that in mind, we’ve selected four horses who have won heavy ground before and they could be worth following. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Sylkie has struggled on the whole this season but there were signs of a revival when finishing third at the Curragh last time out. Daniel Howard’s filly has won two of her three starts on heavy ground, with two of those coming over course and distance. She clearly thrives when it’s heavy and the four-year-old won this very race last year but is now on a 5lb lower mark.
Mr Tony has turned a corner since switching to handicaps and ran with credit when fourth at Bellewstown earlier this month. Improving again at Gowran next time, he stayed on well to get off the mark and wasn’t troubled by the heavy ground that day. There should be more to come from him.
Manhattan Dandy has three career victories to his name and two of them have come on heavy ground. Thomas Coyle’s eight-year-old was a solid third at Gowran on his penultimate start and is adaptable with regards to trip, having won over a mile and 7f in the past.
Narlita returned to winning ways with victory over this trip on heavy ground at Gowran recently and has to go under consideration on that evidence. The handicapper has raised her 8lb as a result but her record on heavy is hard to ignore.
