Golden Mile

We might have seen the winner of this year’s Golden Mile run at Sandown on Saturday, as Charlie Johnston’s Arisaig, priced at 16/1 with most bookmakers, has all the credentials to win.

She was the winner of the Ridgeview Fillies’ Handicap at the Festival last year on her first time at the track and she clearly loved the course, flying home from an unlikely position to beat Surveyor.

Johnston’s filly then ran at Goodwood again at Listed level in May this year, finishing less than two lengths behind Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner Crimson Advocate. Unlucky to say the least, she had no clear run with two furlongs to go and was stuck on the rail but travelling the best of the lot.

Second in Saturday’s Coral Challenge, she ran a blinder under the circumstance as she was last turning for home. The daughter of Harry Angel flew past the other 10 rivals as if they weren’t even there, to say it was eye-catching would be an understatement.

A 1lb rise seems very lenient on the evidence of that performance and the fact that she is a proven course performer certainly bodes well. It’s hard to imagine her still being available at 16/1 if she lines up and another big run could be on the cards.
