Day 3 of Royal Ascot will soon be upon us and we’re being treated to another sumptuous seven-race card. The feature race on Thursday is the Gold Cup and it’s well supported with Group 2 and handicap action. Liam Bramall is back with three more outsiders who can outrun their huge odds. With the competitive nature of the racing, there’s plenty of value to be found. Check out our Royal Ascot page for expertly researched tips in every single race.
Schmilsson (28-1, William Hill) is quite the unknown quantity here on handicap debut. He has progressed nicely from two to three and got off the mark in smart fashion at Bath last time out. The Listed-placed odds-on favourite was no match for him as he scored by over five lengths. This form was boosted by the third who was over 13 lengths behind going on to win next time. Andrew Balding’s colt could be anything and he’s worth giving a go at this price.
Nigel Twiston-Davies having a runner in a top tier race isn’t uncommon. However, you wouldn’t expect it to be in a Group 1 flat race. Earlofthecotswolds (40-1, William Hill) beat Tuesday’s Ascot Stakes winner Coltrane by six lengths in an all-weather finals day qualifier in March. This is a crazy price on that evidence and could well run into a place at huge odds.
Kitsune Power (28-1, Boylesports) looked a class above his opposition at Nottingham last time out when winning by a comfortable three lengths. The handicapper gave him a 7lb rise for that win which could easily have been more. It’s likely that he’s progressing still having had just six runs so far. There will undoubtedly be a strong gallop which would give him a lead and prevent him from hitting the front too soon. This’ll suit Roger Varian’s gelding and he should run a big race.
