The going at Newmarket Racecourse is good ahead of Sunday’s Qipco 1,000 Guineas Stakes meeting. We’ve identified three likely types who might appreciate a sound surface to get us back into the winner’s enclosure as the Flat season begins to heat up.
Silver Lady could start off what could be a brilliant day for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin. This Sea The Stars filly produced a career-best performance when landing a Group 2 at Meydan in January over a mile. That was on good ground so the conditions will be ideal and she looks like the type who will improve with racing. William Buick can guide her to victory.
Wise Eagle never runs a bad race on good ground and probably is overpriced here returning from 318 days off the track. Trained by Adam Nicol, this horse looked very progressive last year, winning on his return at Musselburgh before finishing runner-up in the Sagaro Stakes after that. He wasn’t at his best in the Ascot Gold Cup but he goes well fresh and has to enter the reckoning here in the hands of Daniel Tudhope.
Although William Buick has opted to ride the other Godolphin runner in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas in the form of Dance Sequence, Mikael Barzalona gets the leg up on Cinderella’s Dream and she’s not to be discounted at all. This girl loves a rattling surface and she made it four wins from four career starts when landing a mile Listed contest at Meydan in March, pulling clear in the manner of a classy horse despite the saddle slipping. It was some performance as the rider was without his irons from halfway.
