‘Mullins is always a danger’ – 14/1 and 12/1 tips for the Cesarewitch and Dewhurst

The Flat season will be coming to an end in the next few weeks but we still have some excellent racing to look forward to beforehand. Newmarket hosts the £175,000 Cesarewitch Handicap and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes on Saturday.

Liam Bramall has taken a good look at both races and picked out some good value each-way plays. These include a 14/1 Willie Mullins horse in the big handicap, who is definitely capable of outrunning that price. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

3.00 Newmarket (Saturday)

Alparslan (12/1, Betfred) is unbeaten in two starts so far and he has loads of scope for improvement. Karl Burke’s colt made a very good impression when winning at Leicester on debut, pulling five lengths clear of the runner-up. Kalokalo finished last that day and has boosted the form by winning since.

A trip to Ireland then followed and he claimed a valuable prize, winning impressively once again. This is obviously another step up but it’s very easy to make a case for Burke’s promising two-year-old. There should be more to come and he has earned a shot at Group 1 level.

3.40 Newmarket (Saturday)

Winter Fog (14/1, bet365) represents the Willie Mullins yard and he is always a danger. The 11-year-old would be the oldest winner in the last decade, being one year older than 2023 winner The Shunter. He has had just three starts on the Flat and managed to get off the mark in maiden company at Tramore.

Mullins’ gelding has a rating of 148 over hurdles and if he can convert that form onto the Flat here, there’s every chance of a big run. Having finished third in the Champion Hurdle in March, it would be dangerous to rule him out.
