Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter: what horse do the trends point to on Saturday?

Uttoxeter racecourse will host the Midlands Grand National on Saturday, a gruelling test of stamina which is run over 4m2f. First staged back in 1969, the marathon contest has been won by David Pipe four times of the last 14 years, and it’s a race where conditional riders do well, landing five of the last 12.

What horse do the trends point to this year? Let’s take a look!

Key Trends

  • 19/21 – Aged 9 or younger
  • 19/21 – Had won between 1-4 times over fences before
  • 18/21 – Carried 10-12 or less
  • 18/21 – Had won over at least 3m (fences) before
  • 17/21 – Won by an Irish bred horse
  • 16/21 – Had raced within the last 8 weeks
  • 14/21 – Finished in the top 3 last time out

Trends Tip

If you are a trends follower, then Knockanore could be the horse for you. As previously mentioned, conditional riders have a good record in the race and 5lb claimer Freddie Mitchell will take the ride on the Ryan Potter-trained Irish-bred runner.

The eight-year-old son of Shantou arrives here off the back of a 16-length demolition job in the Eider Chase at Newcastle when last seen. He will have to overcome a 10lb hike in the weights as a consequence but the manner of that victory was quite taking and there’s a chance he could be up to the job.

He has also won on both heavy and good so ground will hold no fears for this boy, but he will have to be at his very best to see off the MyRacing tip, Mr Vango, who despite having to carry a big weight, is the class horse in the race and a relentless galloper. It should be a cracker.
