Matt first went racing in February 1982 at just 3 months old. Attracted to the sport by Desert Orchid in the late 80's, a media degree started a path to horse racing journalism. Owner of many horses and greyhounds through the years, the latter has led to the formation of the myracing greyhound syndicate, a Greyhound Writers Association membership as well as appearances on Racing Post Greyhound TV.
Tonight sees the culmination of the £175,000 Greyhound Derby, live on RPGTV. It’s been a great competition so far, with one of our greyhound derby antepost tips, Ballymac Fairone, making the final having been tipped up at 125/1!
We will have greyhound tips for the card, with the main feature coming up at 9.09pm. All six sets of connections will be happy enough with their trap draws which should serve up a final to savour.
21.09 Towcester – English Greyhound Derby Final
Newinn Session – Didn’t look in love with the track in the early rounds but was much happier when pinging out last week. Needs another break like that with serious early outside him or he’ll have too much to do.
Deerjet Sydney – The 2020 champion has looked superb throughout the competition in his bid to repeat. He was no match for Ballymac Fairone in the semis but has his perfect draw tonight so commands serious respect.
Ballymac Fairone – Tipped up at 125/1 antepost for this competition and now favourite. He has trapped best from the middle so this draw looks perfect. He has to break to lead up the 2 but if he can, he looks the most likely winner.
Kilara Lion – A cracking campaigner, he’s as genuine as the day is long. He has racked up the appearances in Category 1 competitions in the last year for all that it’s hard to see him winning this.
Ballymac Wild – The worst drawn of the railers but he is the strongest runner. Is going to have to ride his luck but a slow break might be to his advantage, able to cross to the rails behind the field.
Thorn Falcon – Sole wide runner in a field where the other five want the rails has to afford him immediate respect. Made a hugely impressive start to his career, needs a new best ever run but any trouble inside boosts his chance.
Conclusion
What a superb final this looks on paper. Ballymac Fairone looks the one to beat here, with the strong likelihood of better to come from a dog who is only just out of puppy status. Deerjet Sydney won’t relinquish his crown without a fight and looks the main danger with Thorn Falcon to fill out the frame courtesy of his plot draw. 3-2-6
