Liam Bramall’s ante-post selections have been on fire recently, after tipping the winners of the Ladbrokes Trophy and Morebattle Hurdle at 16/1 and 14/1 in the last two weeks. He’s seeking to complete the hat-trick with a 20/1 selection in Saturday’s Imperial Cup at Sandown. The horse in question won impressively last time out and remains very lightly raced over hurdles. Gooloogong (20/1, bet365) has only had four starts over hurdles so far and George Baker’s six-year-old has plenty of scope for improvement. A two-time winner on the Flat, he stays two miles in that sphere and showed a good attitude to score by a head at Kempton in May.
It was a fair effort when third behind Electric Mason on his second start over hurdles at Fontwell in November 2024 and he managed to go one better over the same course and distance next time. Connections kept him on the Flat after that but he returned to hurdles at Kempton recently.
That was his first start in handicap company and he defied a 250-day absence to win impressively. Prominent throughout, he hit the front before the second-last flight and pulled clear on the run-in to score by 12 lengths. Improvement seems likely and the best is surely yet to come from him.
The handicapper responded with a 10lb rise, which was more than justified, and the steep step up in grade could be fully justified. Nicky Henderson’s Khrisma heads the ante-post market but you could easily make the case that Gooloogong’s recent success is a better piece of form.
