Leading Irish amateur jockey travels for first ever ride at Hamilton on Monday

Leading Irish amateur jockey Finny Maguire doesn’t ride too many on the Flat at all. In fact, in his entire career, he has ridden just four horses on the Flat in Britain, but two of those won at odds of 5/1 and 8/11 and he won’t be travelling across the Irish Sea just to make up the numbers, that’s for sure. Maguire has a sole ride in the 6f amateur riders’ handicap and at first glance, the horse has a massive chance. Let’s take a look at the runner in more detail below.

2.25 Hamilton

The horse in question is the Philip Makin runner Impressor, who bids to follow up an impressive victory at this track over the slightly short trip of five furlongs just seven days ago. The eight-year-old has won over this trip around here too and it’s clear that he is a bit of a course specialist.

Impressor was sent off the 9/4 favourite when comfortably dispatching his rivals here last week by a length and a half, running off a mark of 68 on the day. He has gone up 4lb in the weights as a consequence and Archie Young, who claimed 5lb the last day, won’t be on here, so he is effectively 9lb worse off at the weights.

Nonetheless, a good jockey in a race of this nature is worth his weight in gold and there aren’t too many amateurs out there as good as Maguire. The ground is forecast to have a bit of cut in it which won’t be an issue. Impressor has form on all sorts of ground and is a very versatile type.
