Owners have to go to great lengths when buying these days and the market is extremely competitive. There are two horses running at Kempton on Wednesday that come with big price tags and lofty expectations. Roger Varian is unleashing a full-sister to the excellent miler Charyn, who cost 850,000 guineas, so keep your eyes peeled. Charlie Appleby also runs an interesting €1,000,000 debutant with a smart US pedigree. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
National History is one of two runners in this race for the yard but William Buick has sided with the once-raced Ruler Of Time. James Doyle is a more than capable deputy however and it wouldn’t be the first time that Buick has picked the wrong horse.
Trainer Charlie Appleby has a 16 per cent strike-rate with two-year-old debutants at Kempton and he will be hoping that this son of Maxfield can better that. Recent stable form has also been pretty healthy and the yard are operating at a strike of 22 per cent in the last fortnight.
Shinara represents the Roger Varian yard and she has a pedigree to die for. It’s no wonder that she came with such a big price tag, as her full-brother Charyn was an extremely talented miler. This daughter of Dark Angel is also related to a couple of other Group race winners.
Charyn himself won three Group 1s and expectations will be high as a result. We didn’t get to see her as a two-year-old so she’s entitled to improve for the experience. Roger Varian’s strike-rate with three-year-old newcomers at Kempton is just four per cent but not many of those runners have her pedigree.
