Joseph O’Brien sends a runner to Newmarket for just the second time this season

Joseph O’Brien is a top trainer in both codes and it’s often worth paying attention when he sends runners over from Ireland. He’s had just one runner at Newmarket so far this season and that was Scorthy Champ in the 2000 Guineas.

That looks set to change on Friday however as he’s due to run one in the Listed Rosemary Stakes, the opening race on the card. It’s a long way to go so connections will surely be hoping for some compensation in the form if prize money.

The filly in question is a big price but her best form suggests she’s not out of it. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Mojave River made her debut in a valuable event for unraced two-year-olds at Deauville last season and she came out on top by two lengths. She then struggled a little in Listed and Group 3 company but produced a much better performance when fifth in the Athasi Stakes on seasonal debut.

Finishing in front of Ribblesdale Stakes winner Garden Of Eden that day, she had Coronation Stakes victor Cercene ahead of her. A reproduction of that form would give the daughter of Mohaather every chance, although she perhaps isn’t the most consistent of performers.

O’Brien’s filly won an average race at Cork in July but was well beaten in two starts either side of that. The general pattern of her form suggests she’s set to run well and the return to a mile will suit, having failed to see the trip out at Gowran last month.
