There are eight races live on ITV on Saturday and five of those are at Cheltenham. Their two-day December meeting concludes and there’s some competitive action on offer. There are plenty of each-way opportunities to be had so we’ve selected three outsiders that may have snuck under the radar. These include a fascintating 18-1 shot in the feature race, the December Gold Cup. You can check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Torn And Frayed (18-1, Paddy Power) was an easy winner of a similar race here on New Year’s Day and is capable of running well, despite being 3lb out of the handicap. He can be forgiven for a rather tired effort on seasonal reappearance in the Paddy Power Gold Cup. This lad should improve plenty for the run and much better is expected here. Nigel Twiston-Davies is a prolific local trainer that should never be ruled out here at Cheltenham.
Rapper (25-1, bet365) cruised home by over eight lengths over an extended 3m2f here back in January. His current mark is just 3lb higher and he should be very competitive on that evidence. The presence of Protektorat gives him a feather-weight of just 10st 3lb to carry and he had excuses at Kelso last time out. It would be no surprise to see him return to form.
Carrigmoorna Rowan (20-1, bet365) was an impressive winner of his second Irish point but is yet to get off the mark under rules. He kept on well to finish third over 2m4f at Worcester on hurdles debut and the step up to three miles will suit. Harry Fry isn’t always the boldest of trainers so it’s interesting that he sends a once-raced maiden hurdler into this Grade 2 event. That alone suggests he’s expected to be capable of running a big race.
