Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin shot to the head of the market for the Grand National after his Cheltenham success but trainer Gavin Cromwell has since ruled him out of the Aintree showpiece. This means the race has been blown wide open and with that in mind, we’ve got some selections at bigger prices to consider for your shortlist. Willie Mullins’ gelding needed every yard of the extended 3m4f trip to win the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown so stamina shouldn’t be an issue. He struggled in Grade 1 company earlier on in the season but it was a much better display when fourth in the Bobbyjo Chase last month. This sort of test should be ideal for the the nine-year-old and a big run could be on the cards.
Paul Nicholls hasn’t had the best of seasons but a Cheltenham Festival winner should boost the yard’s confidence. Kandoo Kid has been aimed at this race for a long time and he was a good winner of the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in November. His latest run in the Greatwood Gold Cup was nothing more than a fitness exercise and if the gelding stays the extended 4m2f trip, he could very well be in the mix.
Slightly shorter than the other two selections, Perceval Legallois has won two competitive handicaps at Leopardstown this term. The second of those came over hurdles and you would imagine connections were trying to protect his chase mark. Gavin Cromwell knows what he’s doing with these staying chasers and there could be more to come from him.
