‘Improvement is his middle name’ – Three Gordon Elliott horses to back at Punchestown

The final spring National Hunt festival to take place this year is the Punchestown Festival, which starts at the end of this month. Willie Mullins will probably dominate once again but Gordon Elliott is likely to provide some stiff competition. With that in mind, we’ve picked out three of his potential runners that could be worth backing. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

The Yellow Clay

This horse ran an absolute screamer in the Turners’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. With all the hype surrounding Mullins’ Final Demand and Skelton’s The New Lion, he was the unfairly forgotten horse going into the race. Pushing the latter all the way to the line, he was denied by just shy of a length back in second. He has the option of the extended 2m4f Grade 1 novice hurdle or the three-mile one and frankly you wouldn’t want to take him on in either.

Teahupoo

The 2024 Cheltenham Festival Stayers’ Hurdle winner was an impressive winner of the Punchestown equivalent last year and you would imagine he’ll be hard to beat once again. It’s possible that he needed the run when second to Bob Olinger at Cheltenham last time out and he’s expected to turn the tables this time around. A little bit of rain between now and then would boost his hopes further but yielding shouldn’t be an issue, on the evidence of last year’s win.

Honesty Policy

Improvement is his middle name and he progressed to win the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree when last seen. Elliott’s five-year-old got off the mark in a maiden at Navan in February and followed up in a Leopardstown novice after that. Clearly going the right way, he’ll have every chance of going close at Punchestown, provided he avoids stablemate the Yellow Clay.
