The Coral Gold Cup takes place at Newbury on Saturday and it’s one of the most valuable and competitive handicaps on the calendar. It’s been won by legends such as Denman in the past and it’s a race all trainers want on their CV. Liam Bramall has picked out a 20-1 shot who has the ideal profile for the £250,000 event. Datsalrightgino improved significantly throughout the season as a novice chaser last term and put in some excellent efforts. He finished a creditable second to Stage Star at Cheltenham in January and progressed to win a Grade 2 at Ayr in April. He wasn’t suited by the removal of a significant number of fences at Aintree on seasonal debut and can be forgiven for that effort.
Jamie Snowden’s charge is unraced over three miles and is therefore totally unexposed over the trip. The 3m2f trip here will take some getting but it’s worth the risk at the prices. His handicap mark of 148 looks reasonable on what he’s achieved thus far and it leaves room for further improvement. Regular rider Gavin Sheehan has been very keen to step him up in distance and a big run could be on the cards.
Snowden is clearly a big fan of this horse and he’s excited to see him go up in trip. He said: “He improved 20lb going chasing last season, when he won a Grade 2 at Ayr. He wasn’t helped by the fact they didn’t jump six fences in the Old Roan on his return but the race did him good and I think we’ll step up in trip for the Coral Gold Cup next month. Gavin was always keen to see him step up even as a novice hurdler over two miles. He’s unexposed over three miles, so let’s give a big race a go.”
