‘He’s improving with every run’ – Don’t overlook this 100/1 Derby contender

Strong contenders for next month’s Epsom Derby seem to be dropping like flies and it’s now becoming a wide-open race. Ante-post favourite City Of Troy is easy to oppose on the evidence of his 2000 Guineas flop and those available at bigger prices are looking attractive. With this in mind, Liam Bramall has picked out a 100/1 ante-post tip that could spring a major surprise if lining up. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Epsom Derby

London City (100/1, Paddy Power) is a huge specimen and it’s no surprise that he failed to get off the mark as a two-year-old. Aidan O’Brien’s colt was well beaten in two starts and he looked a bit weak and backward. This means there was always going to be loads of improvement to come at three.

Going up in trip to an extended 1m2f on his first start at this season, he kept on well to score by a length-and-a-half at Dundalk. The fact that he defied his yard’s appalling form at that stage of the season means you can mark that performance up.

He saw the trip out well when getting back up to win on handicap debut at York last week and you would imagine his mark will creep up towards the three-figure mark when reassessed. Improving with every run, his profile is heading the right way for a potential tilt at the derby.

Another regally bred Ballydoyle inmate, he’s out of 1000 Guineas winner Winter. She was an exceptional filly that improved significantly as a three-year-old and her son appears to be following suit. The son of Justify is not guaranteed to line up but he’s capable of outrunning these odds if he does.
