Haydock is well known to be a tough track when conditions are particularly testing, as they are on Monday. Heavy ground form is going to be essential when making selections and we have you covered on that front. Here are four horses with proven form in heavy going that are likely to thrive in the mud. Bushypark has won four of his nine starts on heavy ground and is therefore likely to appreciate the conditions more than most here. Philip Kirby’s 10-year-old has won over 3m6f in the past so stamina is definitely his forte, which is a big plus. His last success came over course and distance off a 1lb lower mark in December 2023 and a return to winning ways could be on the agenda.
Classic Maestro has been in fine form so far this term for trainer Jennie Candlish. Successful on just his second chase start on heavy ground here earlier this month, it’s hard to know what to make of the form as it was a match but he did win by 67 lengths. This is obviously tougher but he returns to handicaps on the same mark and is yet to finish outside of the first two in eight starts on heavy.
Cream Of The West struggled after a bad mistake at the second fence on chase debut at Hexham and was always on the back foot after that. Nick Alexander’s gelding is entitled to improve for the run however and the step back up in trip will also help. One of three previous heavy ground winners in the field, his 50 per cent strike-rate makes him the one to beat.
Montgomery won his sole start on heavy ground and his trainer, Venetia Williams, has a reputation for thriving when the mud flies. It was a fair effort when sixth on his first attempt over a marathon trip at Sandown on seasonal debut and improvement is anticipated here.
