‘He belongs at the top table’ – Group 1 horses to follow over the rest of the season

We’re into July now and with Royal Ascot out of the way, now is a good time to review the first part of the Flat season. There are plenty of major meetings and Group 1 races still to come; such as Glorious Goodwood and York’s Ebor Festival. With this in mind, we’ve selected four horses to follow in the top races over the course of the summer and early autumn. Dancing Gemini

Connections will be slightly frustrated by the fact that City Of Troy missed the Irish Derby to go to the Eclipse instead. They probably would’ve liked to avoid Dancing Gemini’s Epsom conqueror but the pair are set to clash again this weekend. He belongs at the top table and looks more than capable of winning a Group 1 at around 1m2f.

Henry Longfellow

His performance in the St James’s Palace Stakes was unsurprisingly a vast improvement on what we saw in the French Guineas. This impeccably bred son of Minding won a Group 1 at two and will surely be winning more races at the top level. A step up in trip wouldn’t go a miss and he possesses all the ability in the world.

Calandagan

The French-trained three-year-old was one of the most impressive winners at Royal Ascot and he bolted up to win the King Edward VII Stakes by six lengths. He will be faced with tougher tasks from now on but he’s clearly a very smart colt and is definitely one to watch.

Port Fairy

Aidan O’Brien’s filly could be well worth following, with races like the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks still to come. Ryan Moore gave her a cracking ride to win the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot on just her fourth start. She’s clearly learning on the job and further progress can’t be ruled out with that in mind. Group 1 races will be on the agenda now and she should be a force.
