“Ground will be key for him’ – Assessing the main contenders for Haydock’s Betfair Chase

The Betfair Chase will be run at Haydock Park Racecourse on Saturday, November 23rd, and it is set to be a fantastic renewal. Below, we assess the main contenders and give our view on who should come out on top! Remember, you can find all of today’s free horse racing tips on the website so head on over for a gander.

Grey Dawning

One of Dan Skelton’s leading hopefuls for the coming season, the son of Flemensfirth won’t want the ground to be on the good side so they’ll be looking for some rain during the week. Installed as the clear antepost favourite, last year’s Turners Novices’ Chase winner disappointed at Aintree, and the form of his Cheltenham win hasn’t worked out that well. He could be vulnerable and ground will be key for him.

Corbetts Cross

Another second-season chaser is this JP McManus-owned gelding trained by Emmet Mullins. He won the National Hunt Chase in a canter back in March but it was a very poor affair. He was a good third behind Gerri Colombe at Aintree and this could be the perfect test for him off the back of a tame return effort at Wexford.

Ahoy Senor (Tip)

Lucinda Russell’s stable star went into many notebooks after his eyectatching run when third in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree on his return. The step up in trip will suit and if his jumping holds up, he’s a big player.

Royale Pagaille

An easy winner of this race last year, Venetia Williams’ runner will find this year’s renewal a much deeper contest, but he is respected. He hasn’t been seen since falling in the Cotswold Chase back in January but he goes well fresh.
