George Boughey has a 46% return at Brighton this year and sends one Tuesday runner

Brighton Racecourse

Trainer George Boughey is a very shrewd operator and has amassed an impressive 46 per cent strike-rate at Brighton Racecourse this year. From just 13 runners at the track, he has netted six winners, a phenomenal return, and he will send just one horse south to take his chance there on Tuesday! Let’s take a look at the horse in more detail below.

2.15 Brighton

The horse in question is Francis Drake, who will take his chance in the opening 5f apprentice handicap, and he will have the talented Jack Callan aboard. The three-year-old son of Belardo was winless in six starts for Simon & Ed Crisford, but has fared much better since joining the Boughey stable.

Beaten less than two lengths on his stable debut over 5f at Windsor in July when fifth of six runners, he was a different proposition on the all-weather at Kempton next time when winning over an extra furlong, seemingly suited by the step up in trip.

Francis Drake did his best to back up that victory at Lingfield next time but couldn’t reel in the impressive all the way winner Style King on a sharp track, again over 6f. Nonetheless, it was a cracking effort again and finally the horse was seeing some real progress.

Perhaps this boy didn’t like the very soft ground when sent off a 2/1 chance at Salisbury last time but he underperformed. There is also a chance that he’s simply better on the all-weather, but back on slightly better ground over the stiff 5f, in theory should play to his strengths. Let’s see how it pans out for him.
