If anyone followed our long distance traveller piece on Thursday, they would have been handsomely rewarded. Jack Channon sent one runner on the 560-mile round trip to Newcastle, and Staincliff obliged in good style. Given the hard times we are now in economically, it costs a lot of money to send a horse on a lengthy journey. We have spotted another interesting Irish raider on Saturday as Gavin Cromwell sends one horse all the way to Ascot Racecourse from his base in Ireland.
The horse in question is Yeah Man, who has to run from 4lb out of the weights but will still receive weight from the majority of the field. Yeah Man is best suited to soft or heavy ground, so it is a positive that he will have his optimum conditions. The fact the Cromwell yard have also been in brilliant form in the last few weeks is another plus point, and he has a good record when he sends a horse to Britain.
Yeah Man’s sole victory under rules came in a Thurles maiden hurdle in February, but he won his sole start in points and it’s only a matter of time before he gets his head in front in this code. He was given a very patient ride when staying on strongly into second at Down Royal behind The Abbey back in May. No match for the winner on the day, he has been freshened up and the son of Westerner might surprise a few.
The big concern would have to be his inflated British mark. He was last seen running off 114 in Ireland but has to race off a mark of 128 in this race. He will have to show big improvement to win this, but he could be up to the job.
