Gavin Cromwell is one of Ireland’s top trainers and he’s not afraid to send horses over to Britain. He has had nine previous runners at Haydock, two of which have won, and he’s set to send one horse over to the Merseyside track on Tuesday. The horse in question has won at the Cheltenham Festival in the past and could be worth keeping an eye on with that in mind. We’ve also got a French raider to look out for at Taunton. Vanillier won the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham back in 2021 and did it in good style too! Cromwell’s grey then went on to win a Grade 2 novice chase the following season, which remained his only win over fences until February, when he won a cross country race at Punchestown impressively.
One of his better efforts in defeat came in the 2023 Bobbyjo Chase, where he was beaten half-a-length by Kemboy. He went on to finish second behind Corach Rambler in the Grand National at Aintree and we know for a fact that the extended 3m4f trip is no problem for him.
His recent form hasn’t blown anyone away but he’s entitled to improve for his first run of the season and should be competitive off this sort of mark.
Al Fonce got off the mark at Lyon Parilly on her first start for this yard in October and made a very good impression that day. She then followed up over a slightly longer trip and clearly has some ability. It’s also worth noting that she’s a half-sister to two-time Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo.
