Gamble alert: Willie Mullins’ Scottish National hope smashed into 9/2 from 16/1

Wille Mullins has some decent chances on opening day.

Willie Mullins dominated Aintree once again, completing a four-timer on Day 1 and training the first three home in the Grand National. As a result he’s hot on the heels of Dan Skelton and is targeting Ayr’s Scottish Grand National meeting. Training 11 of the 33 entries, one has been the subject of sustained market support, having been backed into 9/2 from 16/1. We’ll take a close look at the horse’s chances and you can check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

3.35 Ayr (Saturday)

Chosen Witness was a winner at this meeting last year, taking a competitive novice handicap by a nose. The British handicapper has given him a mark of 137 and it would be no surprise if he ends up being significantly better than that. More will be needed here but writing off a Willie Mullins runner is always dangerous.

His three starts over fences so far have been a little underwhelming, particularly at Navan in December. Mullins’ gelding was 50 lengths behind stablemate Ile Atlantique and he was fading before a mistake four out, which certainly didn’t help his cause.

Producing a better display when third behind another stablemate at Fairyhouse after that, it was clear that a return to three miles would be more suitable. He wasn’t out of the race when unseating in a Grade 2 at Navan in February and handicaps could facilitate further progress.

Willie Mullins’ Scottish National squad hasn’t been fully confirmed but it’s quite possible that Chosen Witness isn’t his best chance of a winner. We’ve picked out a different potential Mullins runner at a bigger price and you can check out Liam’s tip here.
