There has been a significant move in the market for one runner at Hamilton on Monday and it looks like a legitimate one, based on recent form. The horse in question was available at 16-1 on Sunday evening but sustained support has seen its price slashed into just 9-2. This runner goes in the opening race on the card, an amateur jockeys’ handicap and it certainly looks like competitive affair. We’ll take a detailed look at the horse’s chances below. The Gay Blade has been pretty consistent recently and has only failed to finish in the first three once in his last five starts. Iain Jardine’s charge also has a solid record at Hamilton, winning once and placing three times in his five runs here. This includes a solid third over course and distance last time out and he’s 5lb better off with Burj Malinka, who beat him by two-and-a-half lengths that day.
He won over course and distance in September 2022 off just a 2lb lower mark, which suggests he should be in the mix once again. His sole win this season came in a weak event at Musselburgh over 7f back in August but his two most recent efforts over course and distance indicate that he’s up to the task.
Once concern would be the soft ground as The Gay Blade has failed to place in both starts on it. That is a small pool of data to pick from however and there may have been other factors affecting those performances. He’s very difficult to rule out as he’s clearly competitive off this mark and 9-2 looks like a much fairer price than 16-1.
