Four horses to back on Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival if the ground is soft

The Cheltenham Festival is so close now, as it’s a week away, and excitement is building. Ground conditions usually have a big impact on results so it’s worth keeping an eye on going updates. If the ground ends up being on the soft side on Day 1, you’ll want to be on the lookout for horses with proven form on soft ground. We’ve got you covered so here are four horses to consider backing on Tuesday if conditions are slow. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Sober Glory (12/1, Betfred) is an interesting outsider here, despite disappointing in a Listed contest earlier on in the season. Philip Hobbs & Johnson White’s gelding has left the run well behind him with two very impressive successes and he obliterated the field under a double penalty on heavy ground last time out. Positive tactics clearly suited and he has every chance according to the handicapper.

Arkle Novices’ Chase

Steel Ally (14/1, bet365) is a very strong stayer over this trip and he won a Grade 2 over 2m3f in good style this season. Sam Thomas’ eight-year-old wants a thorough test of stamin here and his record on soft ground is very good. Victory might be beyond him but he could easily make the frame.

Ultima Handicap Chase

Iroko (6/1, Betfred) has won at the Festival before and this strong stayer was fourth in the Grand National last year. Obviously he wants a serious test of stamina here and softer ground will help on that front. Three of his five career victories have come on soft ground so he’s definitely one to consider.

National Hunt Challenge Cup

Guard The Moon (25/1, bet365) has taken well to fences this term and won comfortably in a competitive race at Windsor last time out. He’s a four-time winner on soft and heavy ground, so wet conditions should play to his strengths, and he’s half-brother to a 3m5f winner.
