Follow these three at Newbury: runners who will love the mud on Saturday

The ground is set to be quite testing at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday and the current going description is heavy, soft in places. We have picked out three runners across the entire card who have previously won or placed in these conditions so we’ve done all of the research for you. These three horses are equipped to cope well with the underfoot conditions. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

1.30 Newbury

It is no surprise to see the Irish raider Thunderbear come over to take his chance as he loves heavy ground. The son of Kodi Bear came over to Nottingham in May and spring an 18-1 surprise over 6f on heavy ground. He has raced in Group 3 company three times since and ran creditably, but all three efforts were on a quick surface. Back on heavy, he’s a huge player in this.

2.05 Newbury

A Grade 1 winner over hurdles, Not So Sleepy has form figures that read 1610211 on heavy ground and he isn’t to be underestimated back on the Flat on his seasonal reappearance. He finished third in the Cesarewitch when last seen in this code and runs off the same mark. If he is ready to go after a break, he’s a big player.

2.40 Newbury

William Haggas is usually a trainer to follow on a Saturday and Tom Marquand will take the ride on Gaassee in this competitive handicap. This horse won on his only start on heavy and, a repeat of his fourth over 1m4f at Haydock in the Old Newton Cup would nearly be good enough to win this.
