Epsom Oaks preview: Ryan Moore might be on the wrong one in the feature

A stellar couple of days of Flat action gets underway on Friday as Epsom Racecourse hosts the Derby Festival. The big race itself it on Saturday but we are treated to top Group 1 action on Friday with the Coronation Stakes before the best young staying fillies around take each other on in the Betfred Oaks. You can find all of our free horse racing tips on the website.

No trainer other than the Gosdens or Aidan O’Brien has won the Epsom Oaks since Talent won the race for Ralph Beckett in 2014. John & Thady Gosden have no representative this year so that leaves the O’Brien runners to ponder over.

Ylang Ylang has been crying out for this step up in trip and Ryan Moore takes the ride. She needed every inch of the trip when winning the bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket last year, and she got tapped for toe when an eyecatching fifth in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on her return to action.

She will enjoy the step up in trip now but is still unproven past a mile so a chance is taken on her stablemate Rubies Are Red, who has proven stamina already. Wayne Lordan will ride the sister of Found, who was unlucky when second to You Got To Me in the Listed Oaks Trial at Lingfield when last seen, staying on strongly at the death.

Of the others, Dermot Weld’s Ezaliya has to be worth a mention. Weld hasn’t won this race in 43 years, but this is a quality filly who beat a good field on her return to action.
