‘Don’t write him off’ – 66/1 outsider for Saturday’s Scottish Grand National at Ayr

The Coral Scottish Grand National takes place at Ayr on Saturday and it’s one of the few big races left in the National Hunt season. It’s one of nine races live on ITV and it should be cracker. We’ve picked one out at a massive price that has some excellent form over marathon trips and could surprise a few in Saturday’s feature event. Outsider tip

Secret Reprieve (66/1, bet365) clearly isn’t the easiest horse to train and his numerous lengthy absences would explain his inconsistent performances. On his day he’s a talented individual and he managed to win the Welsh Grand National back in 2021.

That convincing victory came at the expense of a subsequent winner of the race and off a mark of 134. Currently rated 7lb lower than that mark, it shouldn’t be too long before he returns to the winners’ enclosure.

You can forgive his disappointing sixth at Sandown in March as that was his first start for 357 days and he’s entitled to improve for the run. Evan Williams’ gelding could actually benefit from that as the handicapper dropped him 3lb. Don’t write him off just yet as he has a big run in him and is capable of outrunning these odds.

Major contender

For those who like to bet at shorter prices, Jamie Snowden’s Git Maker looks like a really interesting candidate. The eight-year-old finished second to Inothewayurthinkin in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival and that form has been boosted by the winner, who won a Grade 1 at Aintree next time. It’ll be fascinating to see if this marathon trip will suit and he could be worth a play.
